Sleep Training

Gentle Sleep Training Methods, Explained

"Gentle sleep training" isn't a single method — it's a philosophy that shapes how any method gets used. Below is a plain-language overview of a few common approaches. This is general information, not medical advice; always check with your pediatrician before starting sleep training, especially for babies under 4 months or with any health concerns.

Why "Gentle" Doesn't Mean Passive

Gentle sleep training still involves teaching your baby a new skill — falling asleep independently — it just does so with more parental presence and a slower pace than extinction-based methods. It typically takes longer to see results, in exchange for less crying and more hands-on reassurance along the way.

Common Methods, Compared

Chair Method (Camping Out)

A parent sits in a chair near the crib, gradually moving farther away and eventually out of the room over several nights, offering verbal reassurance without picking the baby up.

Fading

Bedtime routines and soothing methods (rocking, feeding to near-sleep) are very gradually reduced over time, rather than removed all at once.

Pick-Up-Put-Down

A parent picks the baby up to soothe when crying escalates, then puts them back down once calm, repeating as needed — often best suited to younger babies.

Check-and-Console

A parent leaves the room after putting the baby down awake, returning at set (often increasing) intervals to briefly soothe without fully picking the baby up, sometimes known by the name of a well-known pediatrician who popularized a version of this approach.

Extinction-Based Methods

Full or graduated extinction involves less in-the-moment intervention and tends to show faster results for some families, with more crying in the short term. We only use these if a family specifically requests them, and always with clear guidance.

How We Choose the Right Method for Your Baby

The right method depends on your baby's age and temperament, your comfort with crying, your household (shared walls, other children, work schedules), and how quickly you need results. During a Nana's Nest sleep consultation, we walk through all of this before recommending a specific plan — never before.
